Paul has been associated with Unique Group since 2019 and currently works as a Senior Sales Engineer in Singapore.
Q1. Please provide a brief summary of your career to date.
My Subsea fieldwork journey began with Thales and then Fugro somewhere back in 2002. I had the opportunity to work in the ROV and Survey business lines across different companies. Prior to joining Unique Group’s Singapore team, I was working with Forum Energy handling the Subsea Survey and Tooling business lines. I started work at Unique Group in 2019 and it has been a great experience so far working with a capable and well-experienced team.
Q2. What is your key area of expertise?
Throughout my professional career, I have been involved in many ROV and Survey projects. My core expertise also lies in creating a sense of the project at hand and overcoming barriers through collaborative team efforts whilst thoroughly understanding the project requirements.
Q3. What do you enjoy most about your current role?
I thoroughly enjoy being a part of a well-experienced team of people who work together through various stages of the Sales lifecycle to best align customer requirements with their expectations.
Q4. What do you feel is necessary for anyone to excel in a technical / engineering role such as yours?
Passion and commitment are essential qualities.
Q5. How would you describe a typical day for you at Unique Group?
A typical day for me usually starts with a coffee and focus on the day’s list of priorities since we have a number of projects running concurrently.
Q6. Any key highlights to date of working with the company / key project you worked on?
We have had several interesting projects that have been successfully deployed in South-East Asia. In Q4 last year, we also put on hire a large, combined spread of compatts with all the fusion-based ancillary equipment. We also deployed solutions for GAPS systems for shallow water positioning projects with 100% full redundancy and have the means to provide all kinds of IRM equipment to our customers. Unique Group in Singapore is constantly adding new and cutting-edge technology to its fleet and increasing its capability. We also have the capability to deploy and find solutions for ROV intervention tooling and to offer our customers Saab ROVS for rental or sale.
Whilst working on all these projects, the key highlight is to come together with a capable team and deliver the end results and solutions to our customers.
Q7. What do you specifically do to maintain the professional/personal life balance? How has this changed since the onslaught of COVID-19?
Creating a perfect work-life balance is a personal decision and choice.
All of us strive for more clarity and alignment on our personal and professional goals which in turn will help efficiency to improve thereby allowing for greater adaptability which in turn will positively impact the work-life balance.
When there is an opportunity to get a small group together, I enjoy exploring the local islands in and around Singapore during the ongoing pandemic. This has also given me a new sense of appreciation of all things nature. I recently travelled to one of the nearby islands, and I’m happy to share that the water was extremely clear and a lot of indigenous species of fish can be seen while snorkelling.
Q8. What are you looking forward to this year, both from a personal as well as career perspective?
Like so many others around the world, I think I am looking forward to restrictions-free travel just as how it was before the pandemic began. I have family and friends living abroad and would love to meet them in person whenever I get a chance.
From a work perspective, training and development on new business lines such as our ASVs is something I’m also looking forward to!
